Local elections were held in Scotland on Thursday 3 May 1984, to elect members to all 53 district councils under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973, which had established the two-tier system of regions and districts. This was the first election to take place after the 1983 landslide victory for Mrs Thatcher, which resulted in the Labour taking control of City of Edinburgh for the first time.
